If you are a student graduating this term, welcome to the path of applying for a post-graduation work permit (PGWP) in Canada! You have a unique opportunity as a student to improve your abilities and earn significant job experience in order to seek for permanent residency. This newsletter will try to walk you through the process and explain the qualifications, eligibility, and application process for a PGWP. This blog will provide essential information to make your application successful and avoid frequent mistakes, whether you are a recent graduate or still in the last stages of your studies.
What should you know before submitting your PGWP application?
“It is essential for visa officers to read the operational instructions,” says Cedric Marin. This is open to the public and includes a variety of scenarios such as expedited studies, leave from studies, and particular document requirements. This goes above and beyond the instructions for student work permits and the document checklist. How will the IRCC evaluate your situation? These questions are most likely answered by the operational instructions. It can become challenging at times, and legal counsel can assist you in correctly preparing the application.”
Chanelle Rosenbaum: Planning for your PGWP begins even before you receive your study permit. If you intend to work in Canada after finishing your education, it is critical that you plan ahead of time while selecting a program. Because not all programs are PGWP qualified, choose your degree and school carefully. Furthermore, we would always advocate picking a program that is 2 years or longer in length in order to be eligible for the entire 3-year PGWP and maximize your time in Canada. Planning for your PGWP continues during your studies since it is critical that you follow all of the terms of your study permit, do not take any unauthorized breaks, retain full-time student status, and complete your courses. Many applicants wait to hear about the PGWP requirements after they have completed their studies and are ready to apply, only to discover that they have not met all of the requirements throughout their studies and are therefore ineligible. As a result, you should constantly plan ahead and, if you have any disruptions in your studies that could influence your PGWP, you should discuss it with IRCC as soon as possible to try to fix the situation.
Students are not permitted to work off-campus full-time if they are enrolled in a general interest program (such as ESL/FSL) or if they are enrolled in a program of study that is a precondition for their enrollment at a DLI. Students who are enrolled in a DLI program for fewer than six months cannot work full-time. Students are not permitted to work until they have begun their program of study in Canada at a DLI. Under public policy, you cannot work full-time if you are enrolled in an intensive program with no regularly scheduled breaks. If your DLI allows for scheduled breaks of more than 150 days, you may only work off campus for the first 150 consecutive days. If a study program does not have a regularly scheduled break and a student arranges their own break, it is regarded a leave from studies, and the student is not authorized to work at all. Also, during a typical academic session, students must stop working as soon as their full-time status changes to part-time. If your DLI goes on strike during a regular academic session, students can only work off campus part-time (up to 20 hours per week). After receiving official confirmation of program completion from their DLI, a student is no longer authorized to work in Canada until the day they submit their PGWP.
