It is now possible to apply for open work permits under family sponsorship from outside of Canada (outside sponsorship). With a focus on family reunification, the Canadian government has implemented numerous improvements to assist families in “reuniting more quickly and easily”. Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, just made an official pronouncement in this regard.
Open Work Permits are now available for outland applicants:
Spouses/partners/dependents of foreign nationals already in Canada can now apply for a Canada Open Work Permit from outside the country as:
- Permanent residents of Canada
- Temporary foreign workers,
- International students, and so on.
Previously, applicants for Open Work Permits in Canada could only apply through –
- Inland sponsorship, often known as
- Already have a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) in Canada.
Now, those applying from outside Canada can apply for Open Work Permits through family sponsorship.
Difference between inland and outland sponsorship?
When your spouse or partner is already in Canada, you can apply for inland sponsorship. Outland sponsorship, on the other hand, occurs when your spouse/partner is not already residing in Canada and is instead a foreign national living abroad.
Who is eligible to apply for a Canadian Open Work Permit?
You may be eligible for an Open Work Permit in Canada, if you are:
· A foreign worker’s spouse, partner, or dependent kid
· Present in Canada and sponsored by family sponsorship
· An overseas student’s spouse or partner
· Dependent of someone who applied for a permanent residency visa in Canada
· Temporary resident permit holder, etc.
· An international student who has completed his or her studies at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada and is eligible for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) program.
Additional conditions, relevant to the category under which you are seeking, must be met.
Canada has taken more thoughtful efforts to allow families to be together sooner as they wait for their Canadian permanent residence to be approved. Spousal applicants and dependent children with Open Work Permits can work in Canada to support themselves and their families.
Canada issued about 10,75,000 work permits and extensions to existing work permits in 2022.
